With so many shelter and rescue organizations how do you choose?

To make sure your donations and other support do the work you intend it is important that you do your homework before you make your choices.

Here are some resources we found that could help you make an informed decision:

• The Kentucky Horse Council  website has a page Considerations in Supporting Equine Rescue Efforts .
  
• GuideStar.org maintains and gives information on all IRS registered non-profits. 
  
• CharityChoices.com gives tips on what to consider when making charitable choices for any kind of charity.
  
• Unwanted Horse Council which operates under the American Horse Council educates owners about responsible horse ownership and offers guidance to help owners learn about their options.
  
• The ASPCA offers many ideas on ways to help on their page Horses and the ASPCA .
• Homes for Horses Coalition offers a wealth of information on ways to help and how to learn more.
  
• ASPCA Equine Fund accepts gifts from donors which it then issues to deserving rescue and shelter organizations in the form of grants and funding after an application and selection process.
  
• The Animal Welfare Institute and the Humane Society of the United States have created a brochure "Basic Guidelines for Operating an Equine Rescue or Retirement Facility"  you can use as a reference when visiting a facility.
